Leatherhead Community Association: A Celebration of Ukrainian Heritage: the painter Ilya Repin

Saturday | Oct 21
11:00 AM -12:30 PM

Live event or show

Description

Ukrainian-born Ilya Yefimovich Repin was a painter (1844-1930), who trained at the Imperial Academy of Fine Arts in St Petersburg but broke early on with its foreign-inspired classicism to form a new realist school that would reflect the lives of ordinary people.  Repin returned regularly to his birthplace and made it his mission to portray what he witnessed. His surviving work forms an invaluable testament to the social and political changes around him.
