Message In A Bottle – The Theatre Academy at Leatherhead Theatre

Live event or show

Description

Message In A Bottle was launched at the Mole Valley Arts Alive Festival 2024 with an original play co-written, co-directed and performed by TTA teachers Neil Sweeney & Susy Puckett, with circus and wellbeing themes! The story was based on a swashbuckling Pirate Captain Blackbeard who had been defeated in battle followed by a storm at sea, lost his crew, become shipwrecked and washed up on a desert island with only his rum. Drinking and depressed, he considers drowning in Davey Jones’ Locker – when suddenly he hears the siren call of Mermaid Pearl, and a bottle washes up in his fishing net, with a message of hope inside – written by a member of the audience! We quickly realise that Mermaid Pearl has been encouraging the audience to send messages of encouragement, pearls of wisdom and support to Blackbeard, and the messages save him. He builds a shelter, catches food, starts a fire, and is rescued by a passing merchant ship. At the end of the play, Blackbeard realises the audience has saved him, and he invites them to be his new crew!
Since the premier show at The Leatherhead Theatre in October 2024, TTA Manager Susy has been delivering the Message In A Bottle Pirate & Mermaid themed workshops, gathering messages along the way, and is hosting Message In A Bottle holiday workshops at The Leatherhead Theatre in July, at The Horton Arts Chapel in August, St Peter’s School & The Trinity Schools in September & The Weald School & Scott-Broadwood School & Powell Corduroy School throughout October and will be launching the book Message In A Bottle at the launch of the Arts Alive Festival in October, visiting venues all over Mole Valley including a number of other schools and care homes, bringing the book to life!
