Live event or show
Description
Into fitness with flair, folk with attitude, or music with movement? Step into the unexpected with Box Hill Bedlam—Dorking’s own steam-goth Border Morris side.
This special open practice is part workout, part jam session, part theatre—and 100% fun. Whether you’re a dancer, drummer, or melody/rhythm player (woodwind, squeezy things, strings), you’ll experience the raw energy and camaraderie that define our side.
We’re a mixed-gender crew of dancers and musicians bringing local myths and mayhem to life with a creative twist on traditional Morris. Forget hankies and bells—our steam-goth style fuses rhythmic steps, clashing sticks, theatrical flair, and a raw, amplified folk sound with modern riffs.
Dancers will walk away having learnt at least two dances, mastered the Bedlam Step, worked up a sweat without even realising it, and tapped into a completely new way to move.
Musicians will learn two to three tunes, get a feel for live Morris dynamics, explore harmonies and improv (if that’s your jam), blend tradition with modern riffs, and experience what it’s like to drive a dance with the band.
Everyone will have the chance to try costume bits, explore our performance style, and get a taste of what it’s like to perform at pubs, festivals, and town events across the South.
No experience needed—just bring your sense of rhythm and adventure. Expect a friendly crew, a buzz of energy, and probably a celebratory pint after. Come for the folklore. Stay for the mischief.
